(Geneva, February 4) – Alkarama has requested the urgent intervention of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to freedom of opinion and expression in the case of Ismail Al Wahwah, a 60-year-old Jordanian-Australian citizen who has been sentenced to two years in prison for publications he shared on Facebook, in violation of his right to freedom of opinion and expression.

(Geneva, January 31, 2019) – In January 2019, Alkarama was officially informed of the release of 37 individuals between mid-2018 and early 2019, who were employees of former Vice-President Tariq Al Hashimi and imprisoned since 2011-2012.

The Swiss daily newspaper Le Temps published on 6-7 January 2018 an article penned by Sylvain Besson suggesting that the Alkarama Foundation is investigated by the Swiss intelligence services because of suspicious relations.

(Geneva, November 21, 2018) – Last month, Alkarama requested the urgent intervention of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) in the case of Yousef Issa, a 25-year-old Jordanian-American citizen who remains detained without charge since his arrest on July 25, 2018. Despite this intervention, Yousef Issa remains arbitrarily detained nearly four months after his arrest.

Background on the case

On November 12, 2018, the United Nations Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) adopted a draft report following the review of Jordan’s human rights record on November 8.

(Geneva, October 11, 2018) – Alkarama has requested the urgent intervention of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) in the case of Ismail Al Wahwah, a 60-year-old Jordanian-Australian citizen who remains detained without charge since he was arrested at Amman airport on July 25, 2018.

(Geneva – October 10, 2018) – Alkarama, ALQST and Reporters Without Borders have requested the urgent intervention of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) in the case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, who remains missing more than a week after he was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

(Geneva, October 4, 2018) – On October 4, 2018, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the immediate release of Emirati human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor, who was handed a 10-year prison sentence in March 2018 on charges directly related to his right to freedom of opinion and expression. 

(Geneva, October 3, 2018) – Alkarama has requested the urgent intervention of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) in the case of Abudujilili Supi, a Uighur from Xinjiang, China, who remains missing since his arrest in the UAE on September 21, 2018.

Supi has lived with his wife in the UAE since 2017. In March 2018, he was hired as a Muezzin – a crier who summons Muslims to pray – by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs.
