On January 16, 2025, Alkarama submitted a request for urgent intervention to the United Nations Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) regarding the disappearance of Mr. Ayesh Al Harby, a Saudi national currently detained in Al Rusafa prison in Baghdad, Iraq.

Ayesh Al Harby: Disappeared During Detention

The UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, Ms Mary Lawlor, has expressed deep concern over the persistent application of Egypt's counter-terrorism legislation to detain human rights defenders. She highlighted several cases, including that of Mr Ibrahim Metwally, whose case Alkarama previously supported by submitting a complaint to the UN Special Procedures.

Recently released video footage has exposed harrowing scenes of torture perpetrated within "Qarnada" Prison, located in the city of Shahat in northeastern Libya, an area under the control of forces loyal to retired General Khalifa Haftar.

Saudi authorities have finally released two prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders, namely prominent academic Mohammad Fahad Al-Qahtani and lawyer Issa Al-Nukhaifi, after years of arbitrary detention under unfair sentences resulting from unjust trials. Alkarama worked on their cases within the framework of the United Nations special procedures.

Oman Receives Yemeni Detainees

The Sultanate of Oman has received eleven Yemeni detainees from Guantanamo Bay, released by the United States after enduring over two decades of suffering characterised by severe violations that amount to crimes against humanity, including torture in CIA black sites.

A report published by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has concluded that the pattern of deadly Israeli attacks on Gaza hospitals and their surroundings, along with related combat operations, has pushed the healthcare system to the brink of total collapse. This has had catastrophic effects on Palestinians' access to medical and healthcare services.

The arrest of Abdulrahman Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, a poet and activist, has sparked widespread criticism, with human rights organisations urging Lebanon to fulfil its obligations under the Convention Against Torture.

Al-Qaradawi, the son of the late Islamic scholar Yusuf Al-Qaradawi, was detained on 28 December 2024 at the Masnaa border crossing as he returned from Syria.

Every year, on 20 December, the world celebrates the International Day of Human Solidarity, an occasion to highlight the unity of humanity in all its diversity.

On 9 December 2024, Alkarama addressed the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention regarding the detention of two brothers, Aboubakr and Embarek AL KHAZMI, following their arrest by Misrata forces on 7 September 2021.

Disappeared after their arrest

Four independent UN human rights rapporteurs have urged the international community to impose sanctions regarding Israel's conduct in the occupied Palestinian territories. They also called for restoring trust in the international justice system by abandoning "double standards and extreme interpretations" in applying the rules governing warfare.
