Alkarama has learned that the Emirati authorities have released Yemeni businessman Abdullah Ali Abdulhafidh Abdelwahab after nearly four years of arbitrary detention, in connection with posts in which he criticised Emirati airstrikes targeting forces affiliated with the internationally recognised government of Yemen. 

On 19 August, the world marks World Humanitarian Day, established by the United Nations to honour the victims of the 2003 bombing of its headquarters in Baghdad, at a time when humanitarian workers and aid personnel are facing one of the most severe waves of systematic attacks ever recorded in armed conflict, particularly in the occupied Gaza Strip.

The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) has adopted Opinion No. 76/2025, finding that the deprivation of liberty of Hassan Elfargani Salem, a member of Libya's House of Representatives, and his brother Mohamed Elfargani Salem was arbitrary under international law. 

The United Nations Human Rights Committee has adopted new urgent interim measures in favour of Mr. Mohamed Zian, former Minister of Human Rights, former President of the Rabat Bar Association, leader of the Moroccan Liberal Party, who has been arbitrarily detained since November 2022. 

The decision follows additional information submitted by Alkarama on 6 July 2026 concerning the deterioration of his situation in detention. 

Alkarama and several other human rights organisations have warned that the life of Mr. Rached Ghannouchi, President of the Ennahdha Movement, former Speaker of Parliament and an 85-year-old political prisoner, is in real and imminent danger due to the serious deterioration of his health. 

The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED) has once again called on Iraq to clarify the fate and whereabouts of several victims of enforced disappearance whose cases were submitted to the Committee by Alkarama. 

Alkarama is closely monitoring with grave concern the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Egyptian national Mahmoud Mohamed Fathi Badr, who was apprehended by the Libyan authorities together with his wife on the evening of 19 July 2026 at their place of residence, Al Tawfiq Hotel, in the Al Dhahra district of Tripoli. Alkarama warns the Libyan authorities against any surrender of Mr Fathi to Egypt and recalls the binding obligations incumbent upon them under international law.
