On 17 December 2008, Alkarama submitted an individual complaint to the United Nations Human Rights Committee regarding Mr Abdenacer Younis Al Rabassi, victim to grave violations of his fundamental rights.

Abdenacer Younis Al Rabassi, aged 38 years old at the time of his arrest, holds a degree in social sciences from the Jenzour Institute of Tripoli, and was employed at the social security services of Beni Walid until the day of his arrest on 3 January 2003.

Mr Muntadhar Al ZaidiAlkarama sought the urgent intervention of the Special Rapporteur on Torture with the Iraqi authorities on 19 December 2008 regarding the situation of the Iraqi journalist, Mr Muntadhar Al Zaidi, arrested by the Security Services during the press conference given by the American president, George W.
Alkarama addressed the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Special Rapporteur on the freedom of opinion and expression today, to request their intervention in the case of Dr Sadok Chourou. The former president of the Tunisian political movement Al Nahdha was arrested on 3 December 2008 after having just been released on 5 November after 18 years of detention. He had given several interviews a few days before his questioning.

Dr Sadok Chourou was born on 10 February 1948.

The Human Rights Council met on 4 December 2008 to undertake the Universal Periodic Review of the reports regarding the United Arab Emirates.
Dr Idriss Aboufaied arrived on 11 December 2008 in Geneva. He was released on 9 October 2008 after 22 months of detention, much of it incommunicado. He has been authorised by the Libyan authorities to travel overseas to receive appropriate medical treatment.

Upon his arrival in Geneva, Dr Idriss Aboufaied was greeted by a member of Alkarama. The next day, he visited TRAIL and Alkarama which had jointly submitted an individual complaint on his behalf to the United Nations Human Rights Committee.

Mr Bashir Al JooraniAlkarama submitted a communication to the Special Rapporteur on Torture on 6 December 2008 to inform him of the death of Mr Bashir Al Joorani following acts of torture inflicted to him after his arrest on 21 November 2008 by agents of the Ministry of Interior.

Alkarama submitted on 3 December 2008 a communication to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, asking it to intervene with the Yemeni authorities regarding Mr Abdelghani Suleiman, detained by the Intelligence Services (Al Amn Assiyassi) in Sana’a since 28 May 2008 without legal procedure.

Mr Abdelghani Ahmed Hussein Suleiman, is 38 years old and a teacher. Born in Saudi Arabia, where he has always lived, he is a Pakistani national. He is married to a Yemenite national who also lives in Saudi Arabia, and has three children.

On 28 November 2008, Moussa Bourefis, the son and brother of two persons disappeared in Algeria, met with the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances at Palais Wilson in Geneva, alongside representatives from Alkarama and Algeria Watch.

Moussa Bourefis, a member of the organising committee of the Association of Families of the Disappeared in Jijel, informed the Working Group of some of the specifics of the issue of enforced disappearance in the Jijel region.

On 30 November 2008, Mr Salem Mohamed Mjber Abdaslam, who had been arbitrarily detained since his arrest by Internal Security Services since 28 December 2007, was released.

Mr Salem Mohamed Mjber Abdaslam, Libyan national, aged 34 years, and living in Sweden, had visited Libya in December 2007 to visit his parents, residing in Zliten, a city located around 150km to the east of Tripoli.

At the end of the examination of Algeria’s third periodic report during the 91st session of the United Nations Human Rights Committee held in Geneva from 15 October to 2 November 2007, the Committee asked the Algerian authorities to provide information in connection with some of its recommendations within one year.

Within the framework of its activities regarding the follow-up of the concluding observations of the Human Rights Committee, Alkarama has made a submission to the UN body in order to draw its attention to the shortcomings and failures of
