Kuwaiti government authorities have revoked the citizenship of opposition activist Salman AL KHALDI, who has taken refuge in London and was sentenced in absentia to five years in prison for criticising his country's authorities and "defaming" Saudi Arabia.

The revocation’s decision, adopted by Emirati decree, could potentially be interpreted as a retaliatory measure against AL KHALDI's political activism and commitment to human rights from his exile, the United Kingdom.

On 6 November 2023, Alkarama submitted to the Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, the case of Salman AL KHALDI, a Kuwaiti activist sentenced in absentia on 26 September 2023 to five years in prison by the Supreme Court for posts on social networks.

Arrest for publications

The Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior arrested a group of former MPs, activists and academics at an official press conference to show solidarity with the National Assembly MP Badr Al-Dahoum, denouncing the decision of the Constitutional Court to cancel the parliamentary status of the deputy, on the pretext that he insulted the Emir of Kuwait, Sabah Al-Ahmad. The people arrested were later released.

Our concerns
  • Violation of the fundamental rights and guarantees of persons deprived of their liberty, in particular, the lack of protection against torture and ill-treatment in detention;
  • Restrictions on the rights to freedom of expression and the press, as well as to freedom of association and peaceful assembly;
  • Reprisals against dissenting voices, including human rights defenders, journalists and political opponents in the form of criminal prosecution and citizenship deprivation;
  • Persistent discriminatory practices and marginalisation of the Bidoon community.
