Yemen: Amin Al-Naggar, 18, arrested after prayer

On his way home from midday prayers, Amin Al-Naggar noticed that someone was following him - he soon realized that Political Security agents were slowly pursuing him in military vehicles. Suspicious of their presence, he continued walking uncertain of what might happen. Within minutes, a plain-clothed agent confronted him and began to question him.

Yemen: Committee against Torture to examine Yemen in November 2009

During the 43rd session of the Committee against Torture (CAT), to meet in Geneva from 2 to 20 November 2009, Yemen's second periodic report will be reviewed. This report was submitted to the Committee on 13 July 2007. The CAT has submitted questions to the Yemeni government requesting answers in a plenary session.

In conjunction with the examination process, Alkarama intends to submit a report to the Committee against Torture on Yemen.

Yemen: Former Guantanamo prisoner released after 5 months secret detention

At 22h00 on Sunday 16 August 2009 Yemeni authorities released Mr Karama Khamis Said Khamisan a former Guantanamo prisoner, after five months in secret detention under Political Security forces in Al-Mahra province (south-east Yemen). Throughout this whole period, he was never brought before a judge nor were any charges brought against him.

Mr Khamisan was arrested on 16 March 2009 by a branch of the Political Security forces.

Yemen: Arbitrary detention of Mohammed and Amer Al-Baadani

Mohammed Al-Baadani was abducted in 2001 when he was less than 14 years old. His father, Amer Al-Baadani was arrested in 2004. Both have been kept in detention without being presented before a court and tried.

Mohammed Ahmad Al-Amer Al-Baadani was born in 1988 is was a student before his arrest on 1 May 2001 

Amer Mohammed Ahmad Al-Baadani, born in 1955 is an employee of the Ministry of Education and was arrested in April 2004.

Yemen: Khamisan, former Guantanamo prisoner held in secret detention

Karama Khamis Said Khamisan was arrested on 16 March 2009 by an officer of the political security services (Al-Amn Assiyassi). His family was allowed a single visit a week later, but since then he has been held incommunicado. He is seriously ill and fears are that he will suffer further torture.

Alkarama appealed to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, asking it to urgently intervene with Yemeni the authorities.

Yemen: Arrest and detention of Al-Abbab brothers

Three Al-Abbaba brothers were arrested on 19 July 2007 by agents of the political police (Amn Al-Assiyassi) and were held for the first two months in solitary confinement at their premises. They have been imprisoned without trial.

On 7 April 2009 Al-Karama sent a communication to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, asking it to intervene with the Yemeni authorities in cases of:

Yemen: Forced disappearance of Kassem Al-Ghouli and his two sons since 23 February 2009

At 3:45 am on 23 February 2009, agents of the political police arrested Kassem Ali Kassem Al-Ghoul and his two sons Mohamed and Ibrahim at their home, injuring Mohamed. The authorities continue to deny the arrest and disappearance of these three people despite several requests for information.

Al-Karama sent an urgent appeal to the Working Group on Enforced Disappearances, asking it to intervene with the Yemeni authorities.

Yemen: Secret detention for more than 14 years of five Cameroonians

Al-Karama was informed of the detention of five Cameroonian nationals, since March 1995, at the Sana'a Political Security (Amn Al-Assiyassi) Centre, without due legal process.

On 1 April 2009, Al-Karama launched an urgent appeal to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and the Special Rapporteur on Torture, outlining the situation of the detainees and asking these bodies to intervene with the Yemeni authorities.
