On 11 June 2009, the Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted the report of the Working Group on Jordan which was discussed at the fourth session of the Universal Periodic Review (2-13 February 2009). The comments of State representatives present at this meeting and their recommendations are reflected in this document.

Human rights groups today asked two U.N. Special Rapporteurs to investigate the case of Abou Elkassim Britel, an Italian citizen and victim of the CIA's unlawful "extraordinary rendition" program who is currently held in a Moroccan prison based on a confession coerced from him through torture. The American Civil Liberties Union and Alkarama for Human Rights requested that the U.N. Special Rapporteur on Torture and the U.N.

The national institution for human rights (NHRIs) in Algeria, headed by Farouk Ksentini, was demoted by the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions (ICC).
The Sub-Committee of Accreditation of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) has asked the Commission Nationale Consultative de Promotion et de Protection des Droits de l'Homme (CNCPPDH ) to provide within a year's time established evidence that it has not ceased to comply with the Paris Principles. Through this report, Alkarama hopes to contribute to the review by the ICC for the end of March 2009.
Mr Ammar Al-Suttof, a nurse and a Syrian national, was mostly likely arrested by Syrian security forces in Beirut in 1993 and has since disappeared.

On 9 June 2009 Alkarama presented a communication to the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) asking it to intercede with the Syrian authorities so that they finally update his family after 16 years without news of his whereabouts.

Alkarama was informed of the arrest of 25 people by agents of the Egyptian security services on 17 May 2009. All are accused of belonging to the banned group of the Muslim Brotherhood. All have been tortured and are being detained in Sahrawi 2 prison in Wadi Al-Natroun.

Alkarama has appealed to the Special Rapporteur on torture in each of these cases, asking him to intervene with the Egyptian authorities.

On 10 June 2009, the Human Rights Council (HRC) adopted the Working Group's report on Saudi Arabia. During their fourth session of the Universal Periodic Review (2-13 February 2009) the human rights situation in Iraq was also discussed.
Abdul Rahman Abdul Karim Al-Junahi was released on 11 June 2009, without having been subject to any legal procedure.
Alkarama learned that Dr Mohamed Hassan Aboussedra arrested in 1989, detained arbitrarily since, and twice victim of enforced disappearance, was released on 7 June 2009. He is however forbidden to leave Tripoli.

In October 2007, Alkarama made a complaint, on behalf of Dr Aboussedra's family, with the aid of the UN Human Rights Committee against the Libyan government to establish the numerous human rights violations against Dr Aboussedra and his family.

On 17 May 2009, Fares Barakat suffered serious injuries after being thrown from the fourth floor of an apartment building by an officer of the Egyptian Security Services. He is currently imprisoned at the National Medical Institute in Damanhour.

Alkarama has called upon the Special Rapporteurs on extrajudicial executions and torture to urgently intervene with the Egyptian authorities to assure his adequate treatment and also called for his release or that he brought before justice.
