Today, 11 June 2013, marks the anniversary of Dhahbia Bouaicha's disappearance. Exactly 18 years ago, this 51 year-old mother was abducted by military officers at her sister's house, in Setif, East Algeria. Since this day, her children remain unaware of her whereabouts.

On 17 April 2013 at 8.30 pm, two violent explosions from missiles fired by U.S. drones were heard in the village of Midhlib, Dhamar district, 150 km south of Sana'a. Four Yemeni civilians aged between 20 and 40, traveling in a 4x4 vehicle, were killed.

We welcome the adoption of the outcome of the UPR of the United Arab Emirates, which reflected many important recommendations to address human rights concerns in the country.

In particular, we commend the UAE's accession to the UN Convention against Torture, in reflection of recommendations made during its first UPR. We therefore encourage the UAE to provide its initial periodic report as due, in August 2013.

Alkarama is deeply concerned by the continuing prevalence of torture in Egyptian police stations and the increase of deaths as a result of torture. This trend demonstrates the lack of political will to honor the pledges made by the Egyptian authorities following the revolution to put an end to this practice and hold the perpetrators accountable.

Investigate torture allegations, release Tarek Rabaa pending trial

Witnesses play a vital role in the judicial process, it is imperative to ensure an environment in which they are protected and can express themselves without fear for their safety.

This topic is especially sensitive at a time when violations are increasing and symbolic trials of members of the former regime are being held. Many Egyptians continue to seek justice in vain; it remains absent.
