Lebanon : Three Syrians, one Lebanese national tortured

Early today, Alkarama submitted the cases of four torture victims to the special Rapporteur on Torture. Two of the four detainees have not yet received a final judgment and concerns are that false confessions extracted under torture may be used during their trials.

The cases concern the following four individuals:

1. Mr Mustafa Seo, a Syrian national, 26, is a resident of Achrafieh, Karem al-Zaytoune, Beirut. Mr Seo is currently on trial.

Saudi Arabia: Another prisoner dies due to lack of medical care

The death of Salem Aboud Bahaneef on 29 September 2009 comes as another stark reminder of the inhumane conditions in Saudi prisons. Following the confirmation of his death, Alkarama has called upon the Saudi Arabian government to improve prison conditions, to ensure detainees are treated decently.

Aboud Bahaneef, 33, was serving a three year sentence when he contracted a pulmonary infection for which he received no diagnosis.

Syria: Sheikh Abdurrahman Koki arrested in Syria.

Sheikh Abdurahman Koki, was arrested after being summoned to the Political Security headquarters in Damascus on 22 October 2009 upon his return from Doha after having appeared on an Al-Jazeera television show.

Mr. Koki, 40, is a Syrian religious figure known throughout the Arab world.

Yemen: Ahmad al-Mahfili, minor, held hostage by Political Security

In the early morning hours of 23 February 2009, the al-Mahfili family home was raided by Political Security forces wearing balaclavas and armed with automatic machine guns. Shots flew off as the security forces burst through their porch door and arrested Ahmad al-Mahfili, despite the fact that they were actually looking for his brother, who was not present.

At the time of his arrest, agents threatened Ahmad's parents, as well as his sister.

Egypt: Alkarama submits case of Yusuf Abu Zahri to the UN Special Rapporteurs

Alkarama has submitted the case of Mr Youssef Hamdane Awad (Abu Zahri) to the Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions and the Special Rapporteur on Torture. Mr Youssef Abu Zahri, the brother of Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zahri, was arrested by Egyptian State Security Intelligence (SSI) on 28 April 2008, detained for 7 months in various Egyptian jails and regularly tortured by the SSI. He died on 10 October 2009.
