2014 Alkarama Award for Human Rights Defenders to Shireen Issawi

The Alkarama Award is a prize presented every year to an individual or an organisation that has significantly contributed to the promotion and protection of human rights in the Arab world.

On the occasion of Human Rights Day, Alkarama will present the 2014 Alkarama Award for Human Rights Defenders to Shireen Issawi, Prominent lawyer and human rights defender
from the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The event will be held on 11 December 2014 at 18:30 at the Ecumenical Center in Geneva (Switzerland)

In the absence of Shireen, still detained in Israel, the Award will be given to her parents, Layla and Tarek Issawi by Ruth-Gaby Vermot-Mangold, former member of the Swiss National Council and President of PeaceWomen Across the Globe.

Confirmed speakers include:

Dr Norman Finkelstein
American political scientist and writer

Haneen Zoabi
First Palestinian woman elected at the Knesset

Dr Richard Falk
Former UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights
in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967

Deputy of the Great Council of Geneva
