Human rights in Iraq : an Iraqi Delegation in Geneva

Alkarama has invited personalities from Iraq to give first hand information and testimonies about the situation of human rights in the country. The delegation visted Geneva from 29-31 October 2008.

Alkarama's guests are :

  • Mr. Mohammad Al-Dainy is a member of the Iraqi Parliament, living in Baghdad. He has visited many prisons and detention centres and gathered evidence about torture and summary executions
  • Former Iraqi Army Major-General (was not able to travel to Geneva and sent a video testimony), Mr Jawad Roomi, who in the course of his work, has visited secret detention centres run by the Iraqi government and the coalition forces.
  • Dr. Ali Wajeeh, from the Iraqi TV channel “AlSharqiyya”. Mr. Wajeeh who testified about murders of journalists in Iraq. In September 2008, 4 of his colleagues at “AlSharqiyya” were assassinated after the airing of a documentary about human rights in Iraq.

Mr. Al-Dainy and his colleagues gave first hand documented information about the current situation of human rights in Iraq. They shared information about the human rights situation in Iraq which they have obtained, and had access to, because of their various positions.

The delegation has met UN officials (Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights - OHCHR)  as well as NGOs in Geneva.

A press conference was held at the Swiss Press Club on Thursday 30 october 2008, 11:30.

A public conference was also held on Thursday 30 october 2008, 19:00 at the "Maison des Associations" in Geneva.
