Yemen: The Working Group of the United Nations finds that the detention of Mr. Al Chouiter was arbitrary

Alkarama has just been officially informed by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) of the Opinion 9 / 2008 of 8 May 2008 on Arbitrary Detention which has been the victim M. Saqar Al Chouiter, arrested April 7, 2007 and released after 52 days of detention.

Alkarama had requested the WGAD in a communication dated May 9, 2007 that it declares the detention of Mr. Al Chouiter as arbitrary.

Algeria: enforced disappearance of Adel Saker

Alkarama wrote on June 30, 2008 a communication to the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) and the Special Rapporteur on Torture to ask them to intervene urgently with the Algerian authorities in the case of Mr. Adel Saker, a victim of enforced disappearance since May 26, 2008.

Mr. Saker Adel, born on January 28, 1977, had already been arrested in 1994 when he was a minor and held for three years before being released.

Sami El Hajj successfully ends his visit to Geneva

The Al Jazeera journalist Sami El Haj was in Geneva during the week of June 24, 2008, at the invitation of the Alkarama Foundation for Human Rights for his first trip abroad since his release from Guantanamo on 1 May 2008. Sami El Haj was accompanied by the Executive Director of Civic Aid International Organization (CAIO), Mr. Hassan Elmogummer.

As is well known, Mr El Hajj is a Sudanese journalist for Aljazeera television. During the course of his work he was apprehended on the Pakistani border at the end of December 2001.

AP : Guantanamo detainees made to feel like 'nomads'

Detainees at Guantanamo Bay are turned into "nomads" to keep them agitated and to punish those who break rules, a Sudanese journalist recently released from the U.S. military prison said Friday.

Sami al-Haj said moving detainees between camps and from cell to cell appeared to be part of an official policy to destabilize them. "They were made into nomads," the Al-Jazeera journalist said.

The Al Jazeera journalist Sami El Haj will be in Geneva the week of June 24, 2008, at the invitation of the ALKARAMA Foundation for Human Rights for his first trip abroad since his release from Guantanamo on May 1, 2008.

Sami El Haj will be in Geneva to testify on his long years of arbitrary detention and torture he suffered on the U.S. military base at Guantanamo Bay where he was detained without charge or legal procedure for nearly seven long years.
