Geneva, London, Copenhagen, Oslo – Alkarama, Amnesty International, the Human Rights House Foundation (HRHF), the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) and the World Organisation against Torture (OMCT) will jointly webcast the 47th session of the U.N. Committee against Torture (CAT).
Five international NGOs are collaborating to webcast the 47th session of the Committee against Torture, taking place in Geneva from 31 October.

GENEVA - The Alkarama Foundation has chosen Dr. Aida Saif Al-Dawla from Egypt and Dr. Said Bin Zair from Saudi Arabia as the 2011 Alkarama Award laureates. Every December, as part of the International Human Rights Day (10 December), the award is presented to one or more human rights defenders in recognition of a lifelong dedication to the promotion and protection of human rights in the Arab world.

This year's laureates will jointly receive the Award at a public ceremony on 6 December at the Geneva International Conference Center.

The laureates

On June 26, "The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is an occasion to underscore the internationally recognized right of all men and women to live free from torture.  It is an opportunity to reaffirm our collective commitment to prohibit torture and all cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment" – UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

«The term "torture" means any act by which severe pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person for such purposes as obtaining from him or a third person information or a confess

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention recently adopted 12 opinions confirming the arbitrary nature of the detentions of victims whose cases we brought to their attention. The opinions concern the following people:

Mr. Abdul Hakim Gellani, Saudi Arabia

Mr. Tarek Abdelmoujoud Al Zumer, Egypt

Mr. Osama Mohsen Hussein Al Saadi at Mohamed Mohsen Hussein Al Saadi, Yemen

Mr. Imed Al Chibani, Libya

Mr. Mahmoud Abdelsamad Kassem, Egypt

I write this introduction at a time marked by volatile extremes of optimism and uncertainty.

The United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is seeking candidates for the position of UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism.

The term of the current mandate-holder, Martin Scheinin, expires this year and his successor will be appointed at the June session of the Human Rights Council. While Alkarama will not be putting forward any names, we encourage you to circulate this information to any suitable applicants.

The Supporter member provides assistance to Alkarama in its duty by supporting it morally and financially.

Haithem Al Maleh, the 80 year old Syrian human rights lawyer, remains in prison in Damascus for having spoken freely about the poor human rights situation in Syria. In recent weeks, Mr Al Maleh was on hunger strike for a number of days protesting the conditions of detention and the violence which he and his co-detainees are subjected to.
