On July 23, 2019, Alkarama wrote to the UN Special Rapporteur on Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967 and the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing to ask them to urge the Israeli authorities to call on the Israeli authorities to immediately halt the destruction of houses near the Annexation Wall.

On 15 July 2019 Kuwait extradited eight Egyptian political opponents who were arrested three days before allegedly at the request of the Egyptian government. Alkarama submitted an urgent appeal to the Special Rapporteur on Torture against bother Kuwait and Egypt calling upon the UN expert to urge the two states to respect their international human rights obligations.

On May 6, 2019, the Qatari Cassation Court issued a judgment annulling the decision of the State Prosecutor to include Mr Abdulrahman Al Nuaimi to a “terrorist listing” in March 2018.

On April 3, 2019 and on the request of Alkarama, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) issued a decision calling for the immediate release of Saudi human rights defender Mohammad Abdullah Al Otaibi, who was arrested on May 24, 2017, at the Hamad International Airport in Doha by Qatari security forces, and then forcibly deported to Saudi Arabia on May 28, 2017.

Today, the Alkarama Foundation raised the current situation in Algeria with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as the concerned special procedures, after the announcement that Abdelaziz Bouteflika, currently hospitalized in Geneva, is running for a fifth presidential term.

Alkarama highlighted in particular the extent of the demonstrations that gathered several million people in the streets to say “no” to a fifth term, and to call for a radical regime change and the establishment of the rule of law.

The Swiss daily newspaper Le Temps published on 6-7 January 2018 an article penned by Sylvain Besson suggesting that the Alkarama Foundation is investigated by the Swiss intelligence services because of suspicious relations.

(Geneva, October 4, 2018) – On October 4, 2018, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the immediate release of Emirati human rights defender Ahmed Mansoor, who was handed a 10-year prison sentence in March 2018 on charges directly related to his right to freedom of opinion and expression.

(Geneva, September 28, 2018) – On September 18, 2018, Alkarama submitted the cases of Imad Al Tamimi and Israa Al Dujaili to the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders (SRHRD), requesting that the independent expert call upon the Iraqi authorities to immediately cease all acts of reprisals against them.
