After their urgent appeal to the Special Rapporteur on Torture on 6 January 2022, the Association of Victims of Torture in Tunisia (AVTT), Free Voice, AFD International and Alkarama have also addressed the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) regarding the situation of the former Minister of Justice and MP, Mr. Noureddine BHIRI and former adviser to the Ministry of Interior, Mr. Fathi BELDI.

Twenty years after the arrival of the first detainees in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, this prison has remained a symbol of the unjust US policy in its "war against terror", which was conducted outside the frameworks of international humanitarian and human rights law.

On 04 January 2022, Alkarama submitted to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD) the case of Djuma Aris Fadlallah HAMDI who has been arbitrarily detained since his arrest in Khartoum by security forces on 05^th July 2020.

On January 6, 2022, the Association of Victims of Torture in Tunisia (AVTT), Free Voice, AFD International and Alkarama submitted to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture the case of Mr. Noureddine BHIRI, a lawyer and former Minister of Justice and Mr. Fathi BELDI, a former adviser to the Ministry of the Interior.

The release without trial of the Egyptian activist of Palestinian origin, Rami Shaath, confirms the credibility of the accusations against the Egyptian authorities of misuse of measures "to combat terrorism". It also confirms the political use of this accusation as a pretext to repress activists and silence opposition voices.

The UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances, which monitors the implementation of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance ratified by Iraq on November 23, 2010, urged on December 23, 2021, the State Party to locate Mr. Ali Alwan Khalaf AL JANABI who has been missing since he was abducted on July 02, 2014 at his home.

The UAE authorities do not only repress and detain activists and political opponents for many years and impose harsh penalties on them after unfair trials. They also seek revenge on their families and harm to the relatives of victims as a further means of suppressing and silencing dissenting voices. These practices are exemplified in the case of an Emirati prisoner of conscience, Abd al-Salam Darwish al-Marzouqi.

Alkarama submitted its report on Saudi Arabia to the Committee against Torture.

Under the weight of repression in the Arab world, human rights activists and defenders as well as their families increasingly dread exposing human rights violations for fear of reprisals or lack of faith in international human rights mechanisms.
