After more than 10 years since his abduction by Algerian secret services from the Department of Research and Security (DRS), Malik Medjoun remains abducted awaiting trial. On 25 February 2010, he began an indefinite hunger strike in order that he finally be brought to justice.

Malik Medjnoun is accused of involvement in the June 1998 assassination of Matoub Lounes, which he has always denied. He was abducted near his home on 28 September 1999 by the DRS and held incommunicado at DRS barracks near "Antar", Ben Aknoun (Algiers).

Continued Detention Not Based on Judicial or Administrative Orders

Beirut - Lebanon should release migrants and refugees who remain in detention despite having finished their sentences, a group of 14 Lebanese and international human rights organizations said yesterday in a letter to top officials. The letter to the president, prime minister and justice and interior ministers says there is no legal basis for continuing to detain most of these prisoners.

Alkarama has just been informed that Syrian journalist, Ma'an Aqil, was released by the Syrian authorities on Tuesday 23 February 2010, after spending nearly three months in jail without any legal proceedings.
Alkarama has just received news of the release of Ahmed Douma on Monday 22 February 2010. Despite having recently completed a one year prison sentence on 5 February 2010, Ahmed Douma remained arbitrarily detained until his recent release.
Alkarama has asked the Working Group on Enforced Disappearances (WGEID), today, to contact thee Iraqi authorities with regards to the disappearance of Hassan Alani, who was abducted by agents of the Iraqi Interior Ministry from outside his home in Baghdad on 6 September 2005. He was 15 years old at the time and it has been almost five year since Hassan's parents last heard any news.

Wrongfully kidnapped

The unjust sentence issued against journalist, Tariq Abu Zayd must be lifted. He and fellow detainee journalists Yazid Khedr, Moaz Asaluady, Mohammed Besharat, Mustafa Sabri should be immediately released from Security Services prisons in the West Bank.

The Egyptian authorities continue to arbitrarily detain Ahmad Douma despite having completed his prison sentence. Following his return to Egypt from the Gaza Strip at the end of Israel's offensive against Gaza, Egypt's Military Court sentenced Ahmed Douma, an Egyptian citizen, to one year's imprisonment on 10 February 2009 on charges of illegally entering of Gaza.

Alkarama has just learned that Abdul Rahman Koki was released following a Presidential pardon yesterday, Tuesday, 16 February 2010.
Yemeni prisons and detention centers are filled with hundreds of detainees who have no idea when they will be released or even if they will ever be tried. Many of these prisoners were either arrested on suspicion or often with no reason at all, as the Yemeni authorities continue to use loosely defined anti-terrorism laws to arbitrarily detain suspects in the fight against the so-called "War on Terror".
Yasser Alezzi Hamud Al-Fakeeh, a 23 year old student, was arrested on 22 September 2009 by Political Security agents and military personnel while on his home was with his father after prayer. To date, he has been detained for nearly five months without legal procedures.

The arresting officers threw Yasser Al-Fakeeh into a car and took him to an unknown destination, without ever showing him an arrest warrant, nor did they give him the reasons for his arrest.
