Dr Mohamed Jamal Al Tahhan (محمد جمال الطحان) is aged 54 years and married with four children. He usually lives with his family in Al Miridyan region, Aleppo. He is a member at the Arab Writers' Union as well as the Federation of Arab Journalists.
Mr Mohammad Al-Ashtar  (محمد الأشتر ) is aged 38 years and works as a bricklayer. He is married with seven children and usually lives with his family in Al Mazare' region, Al Rastan, Homs, Syria.

On 13 May 2011, Mr Mohammad Al-Ashtar went to the Al Rastan Police Station – Muderiatte Al Mintaka - to file a complaint regarding the theft of personal items. He was immediately arrested, before being enforced disappeared.

Since the beginning of the protests in Syria, thousands of arbitrary arrests, disappearances and human rights abuses have been, and continue to be, committed by the authorities with total impunity. Human rights activists and campaigners have in particular been targeted by the security forces.

Arrested on 12 May 2011, Messrs Bashar, Mohamed and Ghassan Al Sahyoni played an important role in the peaceful demonstrations that have taken place in Syria last March, as they were in charge of coordinating protests locally.

On 30 June 2011, Mr Al Sayed was arrested at his home by agents of the Criminal Investigation Branch of the Police, who were dressed as civilians. He was not presented with an arrest warrant nor was he given a reason for his arrest at the time.

Mr Abou Al Maaty AL SAYED was directly taken to the Farag Police Station, where he was subjected to various acts of torture at the hands of two agents of the Criminal Investigation branch, Ali Maher and Saïd Chaarwy, who forced him to undress and shaved his hair, eyebrows and moustache.

Mr Anas Al Shugri ((أنس الشغري is aged 22 years, from Al-Bayda village in Banyas, and a third-year university student in economics. Mr Al Shugri was arrested on 14 May 2011 and there has been no news of him since. The Syrian authorities deny Mr Al Shugri's arrest and detention and therefore Alkarama submitted Mr Al Shugri's case to the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances on 15 July 2011.

Mr Al Shugri is one of the organizers of the peaceful demonstrations in the city of Banyas.

Alkarama submitted to cases of Mohammed Amin Kamal, Ahmed Jaber Mahmoud Othman to the United Nations today. These two students were arrested by the military for having breached the curfew and were sentenced to five years imprisonment following an unfair trial.

On 3 February 2011, Mr. Kamal (محمد أمين كمال) now aged 17 years and living in Giza, and Mr. Othman (أحمد جابر محمود عثمان) now aged 18 years, living in Giza, were arrested in Giza by the Egyptian military for breaching curfew. Following their arrest, Mr. Kamal and Mr.

Ahmed Mansoor, a well-known Emirati human rights defender, was arrested in April during a wave of arrests targeting those critical of the authorities. At present, he is undergoing an unfair trial with a second hearing scheduled for Monday 18 July.
Mr. Ismail Ibrahim AL-MAIQAL is a 29-year-old Saudi national. Although he regularly entered Iraqi territory, in October 2003 Mr. AL-MAIQAL was the object of an identity checkpoint in Baghdad by American soldiers. He was arrested and brought to an unknown location without having been told the reasons for his arrest.

He remained detained for many days in his first place of detention where he was among many other detainees. He saw one Syrian national executed in front of him. He was tortured and beaten very violently in the head with rifle butts.

Alkarama has requested the Egyptian authorities immediately release political prisoner Mohammad Al Aswani. Mr Al Aswani has spent more than thirty years in prison, arbitrary detained due to series of unfair trails which were made possible due to the unconstitutional emergency law in force at the time.

Mr. Mohammad Mahmud Salih Al Aswani (aged 60) is one of the oldest political prisoners in Egypt. He has been detained for close to 31 years and he remains behind bars in the high security prison of Lyman Tura.
