In a joint statement, United Nations human rights experts condemned the forced eviction of Palestinian families from their homes in the Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem, and considered this as the spark that ignited the fuse of an all-out war.

Alkarama shares the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights  growing concern about the situation in Algeria, where "the rights to freedom of opinion and expression, peaceful assembly and participation in public affairs continue to be under attack.

On 19 April 2021, Alkarama was informed that the Working Group on Situations of the Human Rights Council (HRC) complaint procedure(*) decided to dismiss our communication on Saudi Arabia. Pending since 2016, our complaint documented gross human rights violations committed by the Saudi authorities, focusing on the systematic arbitrary detention of peaceful dissidents, including following unfair trials before the Specialised Criminal Court.

Alkarama, based in Geneva has launched its annual report 2020. It addresses issues related to the human rights situation in the Arab region, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the continuing pace of repression, in a climate of impunity and armed conflicts.

A former Yemeni detainee of the Emirati secret prisons in Yemen has revealed that he was subjected to psychological and physical torture at the hands of Emirati investigators, while being held in a secret prison in the Balhaf oil complex. This complex is managed by the French company Total, in the Yemeni province of Shabwa.

The Committee on Enforced Disappearances (CED), responsible for monitoring the implementation by States of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance, has urged the Iraqi government to comply with its commitments under the Convention it ratified on November 23, 2010.  

On 15 April 2021, Alkarama submitted its report to the UN Secretary-General (UNSG) concerning several cases of reprisals in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Under resolution 12/2 the UN Secretary-General submits an annual report to the Human Rights Council compiling information received on acts of reprisals for cooperation with the UN in the field of human rights. This report brings to light the situation in countries where cooperation with the UN triggers systematic measures of reprisals and intimidations.

Alkarama has sent an urgent appeal to the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, Agnès Callamard, regarding four journalists detained in Yemen, who are  risk of execution following a trial before the Houthis' Specialized Criminal Court, which lack any guarantee of minimum standards of justice.
