Egypt: Sudanese refugee Hassan Mohammed being tortured by the SSI

On 16 January 2010, State Security Investigative (SSI) forces arrested Sudanese refugee, Hassan Mahmoud Mohamed, 32, from his home in 6th of October City and took him to an unknown location; following his transfer to Tora prison 55 days later, his family learned that he was held incommunicado at the SSI headquarters in Nasr City.

In the early hours of the 16 January 2010, SSI officers raided Hassan Mohamed's apartment, confiscating some of his belongings, including his mobile phone and 3600LE.

Palestine: Israeli attack on aid flotilla in international waters leads to human rights violations

Alkarama has received preliminary information that several individuals have died and others have been wounded aboard one of the ships belonging to the "Freedom Flotilla", the Turkish MV Mavi Marmara. Israeli Defense Forces boarded the ship at 4am on 31 May 2010, while the ship was still in international waters, en route to the port of Gaza on a humanitarian aid mission. Initial information indicates that 18 people were killed in the attacked and several more wounded.

Yemen: Three detained by security forces under the pretext of the ‘war on terror'

Ibrahim Al-Nawar, Moad Al-Qadasi and Nawfal Al-Saffi have all been arrested by Political Security forces under the pretext of fight against terrorism, and have since been illegally detained for several months without trial.

On 28 May 2010, Alkarama sent their case to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention, requesting its intervention with the Yemeni authorities, in order that the detainees be put on trial or released.

Egypt: Five arrested following peaceful protest

Mohamed Al-Mahdi Mohamed Attia, Atef Mohamed Amer, Osama Mohamed Obeid, Saad Abu Al-Ainain Metwali, Badr Abdelaziz Mahmoud Al-Fallah, were all arrested on 20 April 2010 under orders from the Prosecutor General following a peaceful sit-in protest. They have since been placed in administrative detention, despite a Court decision for their release.

Alkarama sent their cases to the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention on 26 May 2010, requesting its intervention with the Egyptian authorities.

Saudi Arabia: Lakhdar Meshabi in illegal detention since 10 months

Lakhdar Mesbahi, a 24 year-old Algerian national from El-Oued in Algeria, was arrested on 20 July 2009 at a police station in Medina, Saudi Arabia while trying to get authorization to leave the country. He was detained incommunicado for four months and later transferred to Dammam prison, where he remains unto to this day.

Egypt: Nasr Al-Sayed Nasr is disappeared in Banha following summons

On 26 April 2010, State Security Investigative (SSI) forces, under the command of Officer Samah Heikel, carried out a warrantless search of Nasr Al-Sayed Hassan Nasr's home in Banha. Although Nasr Al-Sayed Hassan Nasr was not there at the time of the incursion, his belongings were confiscated and the SSI agents informed his family that he was requested to report to SSI headquarters in Banha. On 28 April 2010, Nasr Al-Sayed Hassan Nasr reported to the SSI station in Banha and has since disappeared.
