On 1 October 2008, members of the police and the State Security (Amn Al Dawla) brutally raided the homes of several people, arresting numerous men who are currently being held arbitrarily.

Saudi Arabia: Six months of arbitrary detention for Al-Oteibi and Al-‘Omeir, General Investigative Services deny orders for their release

Despite the recent orders of the Saudi judicial inquiry for the release of two detainees, arrested for trying to organize a peaceful demonstration in early January 2009, the Executive Authorities in Saudi Arabia represented by the General Investigative Services have refused to comply with the orders of the judiciary, and insist on the arbitrary detention of a number of persons who tried to organize the demonstration, including Mr Khalid Suleiman Al-‘Omeir and Mr Mohammad Al-Oteibi, who were arrested six months without ever facing any legal proceedings.

Algeria: The national institution for human rights before the International Coordinating Committee of NHRIs

The Sub-Committee of Accreditation of the International Coordinating Committee of National Institutions for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights (ICC) has asked the Commission Nationale Consultative de Promotion et de Protection des Droits de l'Homme (CNCPPDH ) to provide within a year's time established evidence that it has not ceased to comply with the Paris Principles. Through this report, Alkarama hopes to contribute to the review by the ICC for the end of March 2009.

Syria: Disappearance Ammar Al-Suttof since 1993

Mr Ammar Al-Suttof, a nurse and a Syrian national, was mostly likely arrested by Syrian security forces in Beirut in 1993 and has since disappeared.

On 9 June 2009 Alkarama presented a communication to the Working Group on Enforced and Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID) asking it to intercede with the Syrian authorities so that they finally update his family after 16 years without news of his whereabouts.
