Yemen: Scores killed, thousands injured in ongoing protests

yem_18march2011_02
Alkarama is extremely concerned at the continued degradation of the human rights situation in Yemen. Close to 50 people were killed and thousands injured in ongoing protests calling for political and legal reforms in Yemen. The demonstrations are part of a wave of pro-democracy protests in the Arab world calling for change and an improvement in the human rights situation in their respective countries.

Alkarama today submitted the cases of 49 individuals killed in recent protests to the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions. In addition to the 49 confirmed deaths, 988 people were injured during protests in the same, or similar attacks (see the list in pdf).

Sources have verified that the 49 people were killed over the course of March during peaceful protests in Sirt Province and Sanaa. Those killed include a 12-year-old child.

Protests began in Yemen on 26 January 2011 and have continued ever since. Yemeni security forces have reacted with excessive force: the majority of those killed were shot with live ammunition; others were victims of grenade attacks. One of the victims was shot by a sniper while looking at the demonstrations from his office window. Some were severely injured due to powerful gases which lead to fainting, convulsions and respiratory distress.

The current information comes from events post-18 March 2011 and fears are that further executions may be carried out.

Alkarama made a request to the UN Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions to intervene with the Yemeni authorities, in order that it meet its obligations under international human rights law and take the necessary steps to prevent any further extra-judicial executions.

Alkarama calls on the Yemeni government and security forces to exercise restraint in view of protests, and respect their international and national obligations, including the absolute right to life and the freedom of opinion and expression.
