Yemen: Alkarama informs UN Special Rapporteur on Executions of numerous protestor deaths

Alkarama today submitted the names of 20 individuals who were summarily executed by security forces in Yemen during protests in February to the UN, accompanied by a list of 129 injured in the same or similar attacks.

Alkarama was informed earlier in the week of the death of 20 protestors in various cities in Yemen who were killed over the course of February during peaceful protests in Mansoura and Maala City of Aden Province; Khormaksar, El Arish District; Dar Saada District; Sheikh Osman; and the capital, Sana'a. These protests were part of a wave of protests in the Arab world by populations seeking democratic change and an improvement in the human rights situation in their countries.

Protests started in Yemen on 26 January 2011 and have continued ever since. Alkarama has been following these events closely and today submitted the names of 20 people who were summarily executed by the Yemen security forces with total impunity. This, along with a list of 129 injured individuals was submitted to the Special Rapporteur on Extra-Judicial, Summary and Arbitrary Executions and other related Human-Rights-Council-appointed Special Procedures, such as the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Freedom of Expression and Opinion. The number of those killed and injured is 20 as of 26 February 2011, and numbers are likely to continue to rise.

The majority of those killed were shot with live ammunition by security forces who were trying to break up protests. Others were victims of grenade attacks by security forces. Some died of their injuries in hospital. One of the victims was shot by a Government sniper and another was killed during an attack by pro-Government forces on a protestor camp in the middle of the night.

Alkarama is particularly alarmed to note that three minors, aged 14, 15 and 17 feature among those killed, and some as young as 12 are listed among the injured. Below is the list of those killed:

Alkarama calls on the Yemeni authorities to exercise restraint against protestors, and respect the internationally-recognised right to freedom of expression by allowing protestors to organise and carry out peaceful demonstrations. It recalls that Yemen has acceded to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and must guarantee the right to life, as set out in article 6 of this Covenant.
